Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba Face Suspension for Missing MLS All-Star Game
Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba suspended for skipping the MLS All-Star Game, missing Inter Miami's match against FC Cincinnati.

Messi and Alba Suspended After Skipping MLS All-Star Game
Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba have been handed one-match suspensions for failing to participate in the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Game earlier this week. The duo missed the match held in Austin, Texas, where the MLS squad secured a 3-1 victory against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars.
League Rules Enforced
According to MLS regulations, any player who skips the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match. This rule led to the suspension of Messi and Alba, who will now miss Inter Miami's upcoming home league fixture against FC Cincinnati on Saturday.
A Tough Decision
MLS Commissioner Don Garber described the decision to suspend Messi as "very difficult." He acknowledged Messi's significant impact on the league, stating, "I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player - or anyone - who has done more for MLS than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision."
Garber added, "Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it."
Season Performance
Messi, the 38-year-old Argentine legend, has been in stellar form this season, scoring 18 goals in as many appearances for Inter Miami. Alba, 36, has also been a key player, featuring in 19 league matches. The duo, who previously played together at Barcelona from 2012 to 2021, were instrumental in Inter Miami's journey to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Fatigue Concerns
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano addressed concerns about Messi's fatigue, noting that the forward has been showing signs of wear due to the demanding schedule. "Players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days," Mascherano told ESPN.
Looking Ahead
With Messi and Alba sidelined for the next match, Inter Miami will need to rely on their depth to maintain their competitive edge in the league. The suspension serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to league policies, even for star players.
