Cameron Percy Leads Senior PGA Championship with a Stellar Opening Round
Cameron Percy takes a one-stroke lead in the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional, with Ernie Els close behind.

Cameron Percy shot an impressive 5-under 67 on Thursday to secure a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior PGA Championship at the prestigious Congressional Country Club. Percy's performance was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and a birdie two holes later, showcasing his skill and resilience despite recent back issues.
Ernie Els, a former U.S. Open champion at Congressional, is just two strokes behind Percy after carding a 3-under 69. Els is part of a trio of South Africans near the top of the leaderboard, alongside Keith Horne and Darren Fichardt, both of whom are tied for third.
The tournament, which follows Ángel Cabrera's victory in the delayed Regions Tradition, has a strong field of seasoned golfers. Els remarked on the significance of the event, stating, "This one feels more like a major. It's got a golf course with history, and it's got some prestige here."
Players faced challenging wet conditions on a rainy day, but Percy managed to finish strong in one of the last groups, with the sun shining and a rainbow forming as he completed his round. Percy, who recently injured his back, credited his playing partner, Soren Kjeldsen, for setting a high standard early in the round.
Keith Horne, who has nine wins on South Africa's Sunshine Tour, also had a notable performance, holing out a wedge from 109 yards for an eagle on the par-4 eighth. Horne expressed relief that the greens were softer and slower compared to his practice round earlier in the week.
Defending champion Richard Bland and Vijay Singh are among the group at 2 under, while Cabrera shot a 72. The competition remains tight, with several veterans poised to challenge for the title as the tournament progresses.
