Historic Transformation: Pimlico Race Course to Undergo Major Rebuild After 150th Preakness Stakes
Maryland approves a $14.3 million contract to rebuild Pimlico Race Course, ensuring the Preakness Stakes remains a cornerstone of Baltimore's heritage.

On Wednesday, a Maryland board approved a significant $14.3 million contract to commence the demolition and reconstruction of the historic Pimlico Race Course, home to the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. This decision comes just ten days before the 150th Preakness Stakes, scheduled for May 17, marking the last race at the current venue before its transformation.
A New Era for Pimlico Governor Wes Moore emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "There cannot be a better time to announce the beginning of a transformation that will allow Pimlico to become a year-round hub for economic activity within the Park Heights community." The new facility aims to host over 100 races annually, a significant increase from the current 15, positioning Pimlico as the heart of Maryland thoroughbred racing.
Interim Plans During the construction period, the Preakness Stakes will temporarily move to Laurel Park in 2026, with plans to return to the newly rebuilt Pimlico by 2027. The design includes a new clubhouse inspired by Baltimore's Rawlings Conservatory and the original Pimlico Clubhouse, featuring a colonnade and rooftop balconies.
Historical Significance Pimlico Race Course, nicknamed Old Hilltop, has been a cornerstone of Maryland's horse racing industry since its opening in 1870. It has hosted legendary horses like Man o' War, Seabiscuit, and Secretariat. However, its age has raised safety concerns, leading to the closure of nearly 7,000 grandstand seats in 2019.
Economic Impact The reconstruction is expected to bring hundreds of millions of dollars in state investments to the Park Heights community, revitalizing the area and preserving green space. This project not only honors the rich history of Pimlico but also ensures its future as a premier destination for horse racing enthusiasts.
Future Prospects With the new design and increased race schedule, Pimlico Race Course is set to become a year-round attraction, boosting local economy and maintaining its legacy in the horse racing world.
