Les Kiss to Lead AUNZ Invitational XV Against British & Irish Lions in Historic Adelaide Clash
Les Kiss takes the helm of the AUNZ Invitational XV for a historic match against the British & Irish Lions at Adelaide Oval, while Toutai Kefu coaches the First Nations-Pasifika team.

Les Kiss has been confirmed as the head coach of the Australia-New Zealand (AUNZ) Invitational XV, set to face the British & Irish Lions in a highly anticipated match at Adelaide Oval. This encounter comes just a week before the first Test against the Wallabies, adding to the excitement of the rugby calendar.
Kiss, who will collaborate with former All Blacks coach Ian Foster, expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity. "It's a privilege to lead the coaching group for the combined AUNZ Invitational XV," Kiss stated. "The British & Irish Lions are one of world sport's most renowned teams, and playing them at an iconic venue like the Adelaide Oval will be an incredible spectacle."
In addition to the AUNZ Invitational XV, Toutai Kefu has been named the head coach of the First Nations-Pasifika team, which will also face the Lions. Kefu emphasized the significance of this match, saying, "First Nations and Pasifika people contribute massively to the game worldwide. This game celebrates those contributions against a team with the history of the British & Irish Lions."
The Lions' tour schedule was adjusted following the financial collapse of the Melbourne Rebels, leading to the creation of these unique matchups. Rugby Australia has been proactive in recognizing Indigenous contributions, recently introducing an Indigenous Wallabies jersey, and this combined team concept is a first for Australian rugby.
Kiss and Foster are now focused on finalizing a squad of around 25 players, which may include notable names like Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Smith, and Brodie Retallick from the All Blacks, as well as Wallabies stars Matt Phillip and Samu Kerevi. This match provides invaluable experience for Kiss as he prepares to succeed Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach in 2026.
Kefu, meanwhile, has a wealth of talent to consider, including First Nations backs Kurtley Beale, Andy Muirhead, and Harrison Goddard, as well as forwards like Leafi Talataina and Feao Fotuaika. He may also draw players from the Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika franchises to bolster his squad.
The British & Irish Lions' tour continues to be a highlight of the rugby season, and these matches promise to deliver thrilling encounters that celebrate the rich heritage and talent within the sport.
