Zverev Overcomes Illness, Medvedev Battles Nosebleed to Set Up Thrilling Halle Open Semifinal

Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev faced physical challenges but secured their spots in the Halle Open semifinals, setting up an exciting clash.

Zverev's Gritty Victory

Alexander Zverev's journey towards his first grass-court title took a dramatic turn at the Halle Open on Friday. The German second seed, despite a mid-match dash to vomit, rallied to defeat Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (8). Zverev started strong, breaking in the first game, but during the second game, he abruptly requested a toilet break to vomit, leaving the court momentarily.

Upon his return, Zverev struggled initially, visibly unwell, bending over in exhaustion after points and gasping for breath after a marathon rally. "I felt fine before the match. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt really, really bad. I felt ill, went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt OK again," Zverev explained. Despite not being at 100%, he held serve and eventually triumphed in a close tiebreak, finishing with 22 winners and 12 points at the net.

Medvedev's Steady Performance

Daniil Medvedev, the Russian third seed, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Alex Michelsen. Medvedev faced a nosebleed in the second set, requiring a medical timeout, but he maintained his composure. Serving well, he denied Michelsen any break point opportunities and wrapped up the match in 85 minutes. "The shadows on the court made the conditions quite difficult. It took some time to get used to it. It was then better in the second set," Medvedev commented.

Upcoming Semifinal Clash

The semifinal will feature a highly anticipated match between Zverev and Medvedev, two familiar foes. Medvedev holds a 12-7 head-to-head advantage over Zverev and has won their past three meetings. "I think he's the guy that I played the most in my career. I'm looking forward to it," Zverev said. "A lot of things happened in the last 18 months. He's one of my toughest opponents in my career. It's going to be a great match and I'm really looking forward to facing him."

Other Semifinal Matchup

In the other semifinal, 2023 champion Alexander Bublik, who knocked out last year's winner Jannik Sinner, will face eighth seed Karen Khachanov. Bublik fired 37 winners in his 7-6 (2) 6-3 victory over Tomas Machac, showcasing his skill and entertaining the crowd with his powerful shots.

Conclusion

Both Zverev and Medvedev demonstrated resilience and determination to overcome their physical challenges and secure their spots in the Halle Open semifinals. Tennis fans can look forward to an exciting clash between these two top players as they vie for a place in the final.
