Shane van Gisbergen's NASCAR Journey: From Chicago's Streets to Cup Series Glory
Shane van Gisbergen reflects on his transformative NASCAR journey, from his debut win in Chicago to his current success in the Cup Series.

Two years ago, Shane van Gisbergen arrived in Chicago as a relative unknown in the NASCAR world. By the time he left, he had etched his name into the history books, winning the inaugural street course event in his first-ever NASCAR race. That victory marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that has since reshaped his career and life.
A Life-Changing Moment
Van Gisbergen, a three-time Australian Supercars champion, made the bold decision to leave his dominant career behind and move to the United States to pursue NASCAR. His victory in Chicago on July 2, 2023, was the catalyst for this transition. "It changed my life 180 degrees," he told ESPN. "I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for that track. It’s a pretty cool and special place."
From Australia to America
After his Chicago triumph, Van Gisbergen signed a developmental deal with Trackhouse Racing for the 2024 season. He competed in the full Xfinity Series, securing three wins, and participated in 12 Cup Series races. Adapting to NASCAR’s heavier, high-downforce stock cars was a challenge, but Van Gisbergen embraced the learning curve. "The weight of the car and the tires are the biggest differences," he explained. "It’s been a fun and rewarding experience."
Chicago’s Unique Challenge
The Chicago street course, a 2.2-mile, 12-turn circuit, remains one of Van Gisbergen’s favorite tracks. Despite its lack of runoff areas and inherent dangers, he appreciates the risk-reward nature of the course. "Turn 1 and Turn 5 face each other, so you can’t have runoff," he said. "It’s dangerous, but that’s what makes it so exciting."
Looking Ahead
Van Gisbergen’s recent win in Mexico City has solidified his place in the Cup Series postseason. As he returns to Chicago, he’s optimistic about his chances. "This is the most I’ve enjoyed my racing in a long time," he shared. "Every week feels refreshing, and there’s always something new to try."
With races in Sonoma, Watkins Glen, and the Charlotte Roval on the horizon, Van Gisbergen is poised to continue his ascent in NASCAR. His journey from the streets of Chicago to the pinnacle of stock car racing is a testament to his talent, adaptability, and relentless drive to succeed.
