Damian Lillard, a nine-time NBA All-Star, is making a significant return to Weber State, but this time, not as a player. The Portland Trail Blazers guard has been appointed as the General Manager of his alma mater, where he once shone as a collegiate star.

Lillard announced his new role during the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic held in Ogden, Utah. Reflecting on his deep connection with the university, Lillard expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the program's success. "My relationship with coach [Eric] Duft and this program means a lot to me," Lillard shared with the Standard-Examiner. "I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about."

The role of a General Manager in college basketball has gained prominence, especially with the evolving dynamics of the transfer portal, NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) agreements, and other changes in collegiate athletics. Lillard's appointment is a testament to his influence and experience in both collegiate and professional basketball.

During his three seasons at Weber State, Lillard was a two-time Big Sky MVP and the program's only All-American. He ranks fourth in career scoring and third in 3-pointers at the university. His new role will involve close collaboration with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership, providing mentorship and guidance to elevate the program.

Lillard, who recently re-signed with the Trail Blazers after being waived by the Milwaukee Bucks, is currently rehabbing from a left Achilles tendon tear sustained in April. At 35, he is unlikely to play in the 2025-26 season, but his new position at Weber State marks an exciting chapter in his illustrious career.
