Ovechkin’s cereal launch coincides with his record-breaking achievement last season, when he surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record with 897 goals. This milestone, dubbed the “Gr8Chase,” is now immortalized in a cereal box. But the connection goes deeper: a portion of the proceeds from Ovi’s Great Crunch sales will support The GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer, an initiative Ovechkin launched to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research.

Since his 885th goal, Ovechkin has donated money for every goal scored, a commitment matched by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the Capitals’ parent company. These contributions support the V Foundation via Hockey Fights Cancer and will help establish the Alex Ovechkin GR8 Chase Pediatric Cancer Research Grant.

Ovechkin’s Love for Cereal

This isn’t Ovechkin’s first foray into the cereal aisle. In 2019, he collaborated with Giant Food to release Ovi O’s, which sold out within days. Ovechkin’s affinity for cereal dates back to his early NHL days when he lived with then-Capitals general manager George McPhee. “My English wasn’t great back then,” Ovechkin recalled. “I didn’t know how to pronounce ‘cereal,’ so I used my Russian language. He laughed but understood.”

As Ovechkin enters his 21st NHL season, all with the Capitals, his impact extends far beyond the rink.
