From England U18s to Small Blacks: Tom Rowland's Rugby Journey Through Weight and Position Changes

Tom Rowland's transition from England U18s to New Zealand's Small Blacks showcases his rugby evolution, weight challenges, and the growing appeal of weight-restricted rugby.

A Remarkable Rugby Transformation

Tom Rowland's rugby journey is a testament to adaptability and resilience. Starting as a flanker for Bristol's academy, he transitioned to prop due to the need for more mobile players in the front row. This shift required a significant physical transformation, involving intense gym sessions and a carefully monitored diet.

The Challenge of Change

Rowland recalls the early days of this transformation: "I was only 90kg at the time. It was a conscious effort making sure I got the food in." Through disciplined eating and rigorous training, he gained three stone and earned his place in the England Under-18s team, playing alongside notable names like Marcus Smith and Ted Hill.

A New Chapter in New Zealand

Years later, Rowland found himself in New Zealand, part of the innovative 'Small Blacks' team. This team plays weight-restricted rugby, with no player exceeding 85kg. This format emphasizes speed and skill, offering a fresh perspective on the game. Rowland notes, "Everywhere's done at a much greater pace. The collisions in the 70th minute are just as hard as those in the opening five minutes."

Benefits of Weight-Restricted Rugby

Weight-restricted rugby, while still physical, allows for a different style of play. Rowland appreciates the fitness and agility it demands, stating, "I get to carry lots, make tackles, and actually play 80 minutes in most games." This format not only keeps players engaged but also opens up the sport to a broader audience, potentially retaining players who might otherwise feel outmatched.

Looking Ahead

With the success of weight-restricted rugby in New Zealand, there's potential for its growth globally. Rowland envisions this style gaining traction in Europe and even leading to a weight-restricted World Cup. His journey from a bulky prop to a lighter, more agile player reflects the evolving nature of rugby and its commitment to inclusivity.

Tom Rowland's story is more than just a career transition; it's about embracing change and finding new ways to excel in the sport he loves.
