Christian Norgaard's Battle with Sleeping Pill Addiction: A Footballer's Journey to Recovery

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard shares his struggle with sleeping pill addiction and how the club's sleep coach helped him overcome it.

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard has opened up about his fears of becoming addicted to sleeping pills, a struggle that began during his time at Brondby. The Danish midfielder, now 31, was prescribed the tablets to manage anxiety about poor sleep affecting his performance, particularly before away games.

Norgaard credits Brentford's sleep coach, Anna West, with helping him develop strategies to break free from the dependency. "I really clearly remember when it [first] happened," Norgaard told BBC Radio 5 Live. "It was before quite an important cup game in Denmark, and the mind started going. I had a bad night's sleep, and I brought those thoughts to the game."

The midfielder's experience mirrors that of former Tottenham and Everton player Dele Alli, who revealed in 2023 that he had spent six months in rehab for sleeping pill addiction and mental health issues. Norgaard found Alli's interview deeply emotional, saying, "It was tough to watch but also touching. It was quite emotional for someone like me who struggled with it and could've maybe ended up being addicted to these sleeping tablets."

Norgaard emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue in football and beyond. "It's a topic that has maybe been going a bit under the radar," he said. "I think now it's getting emphasized, not only in football but in general, how important it is."

To manage his sleep without medication, Norgaard has adopted small routines, such as bringing his own pillow to away games, taking showers before bed, and reading. "That's one of the things I'm really happy about, having left it behind, and I'm happy that I'm not addicted to it now," he said. "Because, I think, once you've finished your career, it's something you could struggle with."
