Mitchell's Bold Selection Strategy Sets Stage for England's Six Nations Domination

England's rugby coach John Mitchell implements clear selection policy as Red Roses begin Six Nations campaign with strong victory over Italy.

England's New Era Under Mitchell Takes Shape

Selection under England head coach John Mitchell is "clear" and competition for places "very healthy", according to Red Roses back row star Maddie Feaunati. The reigning champions began their Women's Six Nations title defence with an impressive 38-10 bonus-point victory over Italy in York, despite Mitchell making seven changes from October's WXV1 win over Canada.

Developing Depth for World Cup Challenge

Prior to the tournament, Mitchell revealed his strategy to develop "two teams" ahead of the home Rugby World Cup in August. "It's all about opportunity and depth," explained Feaunati, who started at number eight. "Playing with new combinations keeps us sharp and excited."

Feaunati's Versatility Shines

The 22-year-old Exeter Chief, now with 11 caps, transitioned seamlessly from flanker to number eight against Italy. "I enjoy the power game at eight and learning from teammates like Alex Matthews," said Feaunati, emphasizing the squad's competitive environment.

Analyzing the Italy Performance

While England dominated the first half, their second-half performance yielded just one try. Feaunati admitted: "We created chances but didn't execute. We'll be sharper against Wales."

Wales Challenge Looms Large

England next face Wales at Principality Stadium where over 10,000 tickets have been sold. "It's exciting they get to play at their national stadium," Feaunati noted, acknowledging Wales' narrow loss to Scotland. "We're focused on our game."

Championship Outlook

With Mitchell's selection philosophy clear and developing squad depth, England remain favorites for a seventh straight championship and fourth consecutive Grand Slam. Their next test against Wales will reveal more about this developing squad's potential.
