Three-time world champion Mark Williams is at a crossroads, deciding whether to undergo lens replacement surgery. Currently tied at 8-8 with world number one Judd Trump in the World Championship semi-final at the Crucible Theatre, Williams faces a significant choice that could impact his career.

Williams, who turned 50 in March, has experienced a notable decline in his eyesight over the past six months. "My eyes had completely gone," he admitted, adding that his vision has "deteriorated quite badly." Despite the need for the procedure scheduled for 12 June, Williams is hesitant. Fellow professional Anthony Hamilton, once ranked in the world's top 10, warned him that the surgery "ruined his career."

"I have been reading up and talking to people who have had it done, and I've got to be honest, it is putting me off a bit," Williams said. "I've got a big decision to make. A couple of people I have spoken to, especially Anthony Hamilton at length, have said it is no good under the lights and it has ruined his career."

The pressure is mounting for Williams as he continues his impressive run in the tournament. He has already defeated Wu Yize, Hossein Vafaei, and a classic match against fellow 'Class of 92' member John Higgins on the final black in Sheffield. Should he triumph over Trump, Williams would become the oldest player to reach a Crucible final.

"I am in the semi-final of the biggest tournament we've got," he added. "I am still playing alright. What do you do? Do I keep playing blurry? I don't know."

Williams' recent successes include winning the Champion of Champions title in November and reaching the final of the Saudi Arabia Masters two months prior. Currently ranked sixth in the world, his decision on surgery will be pivotal in determining the future of his illustrious career.
