Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Riders in British Supersport Championship

A tragic accident during the British Supersport Championship at Oulton Park resulted in the deaths of two riders, highlighting the risks of motorsport.

In a devastating incident at Oulton Park, Cheshire, the British Supersport Championship witnessed a fatal crash involving 11 bikes during the first lap of the race. The collision led to the deaths of two riders, Owen Jenner, 21, from the UK, and Shane Richardson, 29, from New Zealand. Both riders succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the crash.

Owen Jenner was initially treated at the trackside medical center but tragically passed away due to a catastrophic head injury. Shane Richardson was also treated on-site before being rushed to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest injuries but died en route. Another rider, Tom Tunstall, 47, sustained significant back and abdominal injuries and was hospitalized.

The race, which was the third event of the weekend, was immediately halted following the incident. Series director Stuart Higgs described the crash as 'severe and catastrophic,' leading to the cancellation of the event. Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR), responsible for circuit operations at Oulton Park, along with the Motorcycle Racing Control Board, are conducting a thorough investigation in collaboration with the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary.

This tragic event marks a somber start to the 2025 British Superbikes season, which includes seven more rounds across the UK, culminating in three 'showdown' events. The motorsport community is reminded of the inherent risks involved in racing, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvements in safety measures.

Other riders involved in the accident, including Carl Harris, Max Morgan, Cameron Hall, Freddie Barnes, and Morgan McLaren-Wood, were treated for minor injuries at the circuit medical center. Lewis Jones, Corey Tinker, and George Edwards were also part of the crash but escaped without injuries.

The incident has cast a shadow over the British motorsport scene, with the community mourning the loss of two talented riders. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with the hope that lessons learned will lead to enhanced safety protocols in future races.
