Rob Baxter Leads Exeter Chiefs Forward After Record Loss: A New Era in Rugby

Rob Baxter takes charge to propel Exeter Chiefs forward following a historic loss, emphasizing team transformation and high expectations.

Rob Baxter Steps Up After Coaching Shake-Up

Following a significant reshuffle in the coaching staff at Exeter Chiefs, Director of Rugby Rob Baxter has asserted his position to steer the club towards a brighter future. This decision comes in the wake of a record 79-17 defeat at Gloucester last month, which led to the suspension of backs coach Ali Hepher and the departure of head coach Rob Hunter.

Baxter’s Vision for the Team

Baxter, who has been at the helm since 2009, has taken direct control of the team for the remainder of the season. He expressed his commitment to revitalizing the team’s performance, stating, "I think I know how to move us forward and that's what I'm going to do." Baxter’s approach focuses on instilling a renewed sense of expectation and discipline within the squad.

Challenges and Expectations

The recent coaching changes are part of a broader strategy to address the club’s worst season since their promotion to the top flight in 2010. With only three wins this season and a series of heavy defeats, including a 69-17 loss to Bordeaux in the European Champions Cup, Baxter acknowledges the need for a shift in the team’s mindset. "Our expectations have got to change of ourselves and that will help us be a better team straight away," he emphasized.

Looking Ahead

As Exeter Chiefs prepare to face reigning champions Northampton, Baxter is focused on transforming the team’s attitude both on and off the field. The upcoming match presents an opportunity for the Chiefs to demonstrate their resilience and begin the journey back to their former glory.
