Danny Wilson's Dual Role: Balancing Harlequins and Wales Rugby Coaching

Danny Wilson discusses his dual coaching roles with Harlequins and Wales, emphasizing his commitment to both teams and the exciting future of Welsh rugby.

Harlequins head coach Danny Wilson has confirmed his return to the club following his temporary role as forwards coach for the Wales national team during their two-Test tour of Japan in July. Wilson, who has previously coached Cardiff, Dragons, and Scarlets, expressed his gratitude to Harlequins for allowing him to take on this opportunity.

Wales caretaker boss Matt Sherratt has assembled a new-look coaching staff, including Wilson as forwards coach, alongside Adam Jones (scrum), Gethin Jenkins (defence), Rhys Thomas (assistant forwards coach), and Leigh Halfpenny (skills). This marks Wilson's first involvement with the Wales international set-up since he withdrew from the 2017 summer tour.

Wilson and Sherratt have a history of successful collaboration, having worked together at Bristol and later guiding Cardiff to European Challenge Cup success in 2018. "Matt was supportive of me during our time at Cardiff, and I aim to do the same for him now," Wilson said. "He’s laid strong foundations during the Six Nations, and I’m here to help in any way I can."

Wales is currently on a 17-match losing streak, and Wilson believes the next head coach will inherit an exciting project. "There’s been significant change since my time in Wales," he noted. "The facilities and regional alignment present a great platform for future success."

The immediate goal for Wales is to break the losing cycle, starting with their upcoming matches against Japan in Kitakyushu on 5 July and Kobe on 12 July. "The group is passionate about turning things around," Wilson emphasized. "One win can breed confidence and set the team on a positive trajectory."

Wilson’s return to Harlequins will follow the Japan tour, as he remains committed to both his club and national duties. "When I finish this project, I’ll head straight back to work at Harlequins," he stated. "It’s a busy but rewarding time."
