Dane Vilas Steps Up as Interim Middlesex Coach: A New Era Begins
Former Lancashire captain Dane Vilas appointed as interim coach for Middlesex, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to the team.

Middlesex Cricket Club has announced the appointment of Dane Vilas as their interim coach for the remainder of the season. The 40-year-old South African, who boasts an impressive career with over 10,000 first-class runs and 25 centuries, steps in following the departure of Richard Johnson.
Vilas, who recently retired from professional cricket in 2023 after a successful stint with Lancashire, is no stranger to leadership. He captained Lancashire to promotion in his first season and led them to two runners-up finishes in the County Championship. His experience and competitive edge are expected to bring a fresh dynamic to Middlesex.
A New Chapter for Middlesex
Vilas took charge of his first match at Wantage Road on Sunday, following Middlesex's thrilling one-run victory over Essex in the T20 Blast. This win marked their first in three years at Lord's, signaling a potential turnaround for the team.
Alan Coleman, Middlesex's director of cricket, expressed his confidence in Vilas's ability to lead the team. "Dane has a wealth of experience to offer our squad, and I believe that we will all benefit from his presence and leadership across the rest of this season," Coleman stated.
Leadership and Legacy
Vilas's leadership qualities were evident during his time at Lancashire, where he fostered a culture of hard, committed, and never-say-die cricket. Coleman believes this style will resonate well with Middlesex's players and staff.
"The teams that he has led played hard, committed, never-say-die cricket and I believe that is a style that will resonate well with our players, staff group and members," Coleman added.
Looking Ahead
Vilas will be supported by Rory Coutts, Tim Murtagh, and Ian Salisbury as he embarks on this new role. "It's an absolute honour to be here. Lord's is such a special place and I'm looking forward to getting started with the squad," Vilas said. "The potential is endless for the group and I'll be keen to harness that and help grow their careers."
Middlesex fans will be eagerly watching to see if Vilas can steer the team to success in both the County Championship and T20 Blast competitions.
