Wales Rugby's Struggle: Josh Adams Speaks on the Pain of a Losing Streak

Josh Adams discusses the emotional toll of Wales' record losing streak and his hopes for a turnaround in the upcoming tour of Japan.

Wales' Record Losing Streak

Wing Josh Adams has expressed his deep concern over the current state of the Wales national rugby team, which is enduring a record 17-match Test losing sequence. This slump has seen Wales drop to 12th in the world rankings, a stark contrast to their peak in August 2019 when they were ranked number one.

The Emotional Impact

Adams, who has 61 international caps, finds it particularly painful to hear some of his teammates say they have never won for Wales. "It hurts me when some boys say they've never won for Wales," Adams said. "It's horrible when they say things like that because of the things I've experienced."

Confidence and Talent

Despite the recent poor results, Adams remains confident in the team's ability to turn things around. "We probably have just got a little bit lost and are trying to find our way back now," he said. "That'll come because the talent is there. I know I see it every day, these boys are as good as what we've had and are good enough to produce and win."

Preparing for Japan

Wales are preparing for a two-match tour of Japan in July, under the guidance of caretaker head coach Matt Sherratt. Adams is optimistic about the new-look coaching team, which includes Harlequins duo Danny Wilson and Adam Jones. "It has been brilliant and exactly what the squad needed with a new way of looking at the schedule," Adams said.

Intense Training Sessions

The squad has been undergoing intense training sessions to acclimatize to the expected heat and humidity in Japan. These sessions include training with wet balls and gym workouts in a heat chamber. "Some boys were saying 'that's the hardest thing I've ever done' and it's got to be in the top three worst I've felt after a session," Adams revealed.

Replenishing Fluids

The grueling conditions have led to significant fluid loss, with some players losing up to 5kg in one session. "We're weighing in before and after, we take one bottle of water which is rationed for the whole session," Adams explained. "There's a lot of fluid then you've got to drink to get your body back to some sort of base level."

Looking Ahead

Adams and his teammates are determined to break the losing streak and restore pride in Welsh rugby. "There will be a tipping point. We all believe that and hope it will be this summer," Adams concluded.
