Rishabh Pant Faces Disciplinary Action for Umpire Dissent in Test Match

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant receives a demerit point for showing dissent towards umpires during the first Test against England.

India's wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, has been penalized with a demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for showing dissent towards the umpires during the first Test match against England. The incident took place on the third day of the Test at Headingley, specifically in the 61st over of England's first innings.

Pant was observed engaging in a discussion with on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney regarding the condition of the match ball. Upon the umpires' decision not to change the ball after inspection with the ball gauge, Pant expressed his frustration by throwing the ball onto the ground in their presence.

Having admitted to the offence, Pant accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, thereby avoiding a formal hearing. The ICC stated, "One demerit point has been added to Pant's disciplinary record, marking his first offence in a 24-month period."

It is important to note that accumulating four or more demerit points within a two-year span results in the conversion of these points into suspension points, leading to potential bans. Specifically, two suspension points can lead to a ban from one Test match, two ODIs, or two T20Is.

Despite this setback, Pant has been a pivotal player for India in the Leeds match, achieving the rare feat of scoring centuries in both innings at Headingley, a testament to his skill and resilience.
