Paddy Pimblett on the Brink of UFC Lightweight Title Shot Against Ilia Topuria
Paddy Pimblett is just one fight away from a UFC lightweight title shot, with Ilia Topuria ready to challenge him. Discover the latest in MMA 2025.

Pimblett's Path to the Title
Britain's Paddy Pimblett is reportedly "one fight away" from securing a title shot in the UFC lightweight division, according to former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. Pimblett, currently ranked eighth in the UFC lightweight rankings, made headlines with a dominant victory over Michael Chandler in April, marking the biggest win of his career.
Topuria's Challenge
Topuria, who is set to face Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt at UFC 317 in Las Vegas this Saturday, has expressed his willingness to fight Pimblett, but only if Pimblett secures another victory first. "I see that fight happening. He has to be ready because he doesn't make those kind of decisions. It's me who decides when, where and against who," Topuria told BBC Sport.
The Rivalry
The two fighters have a history, having clashed at a hotel before UFC London in 2022. Initially, a fight seemed unlikely due to their different weight divisions. However, Topuria's move to the lightweight division this year has reignited the possibility of a showdown.
Topuria's Journey
Topuria, who holds Georgian citizenship and recently became Spain's first UFC champion, had a remarkable 2024. He knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to win the featherweight title last February and followed it up with a victory over Max Holloway in October. Despite his success, Topuria decided to vacate the featherweight title in April, citing the physical toll of making the 145lb weight limit.
Looking Ahead
With Islam Makhachev vacating the lightweight belt to move up to welterweight, the title opportunity has opened up for both Pimblett and Topuria. Oliveira, a former champion, is second in the UFC lightweight rankings and holds several records, making him a formidable opponent for Topuria.
Topuria's Mindset
"I can't feel like the bad guy because this is nothing personal. I don't have anything personal against them," said Topuria. "This is sport. We compete and I hope that the best wins. I truly believe that I'm the best."
