Joe Cordina's Comeback: Firing on All Cylinders Against Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz
Welsh boxer Joe Cordina returns to the ring after a year-long hiatus, aiming to reclaim his status in the lightweight division against Mexico's Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz.

Joe Cordina is set to make a powerful return to the boxing ring this Saturday, facing Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz in a highly anticipated match at Manchester's AO Arena. After more than a year out of action, the 33-year-old Welshman is eager to prove his mettle in the lightweight division, where he previously held British and Commonwealth titles.
Cordina expressed his excitement about the upcoming fight, stating, "I'm just happy to finally get a date. I've been ready to fight since October last year." His initial plan to face WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson was thwarted due to Stevenson's injury, leaving Cordina frustrated but determined.
Having spent much of his career training away from home, Cordina has now permanently settled back in Wales. "For the last 16 out of my 18-year career I've lived away," he explained. "But now I'm experienced enough to keep away all the distractions. To come back to Cardiff, be around my family and leave the gym to go home to my kids, it's a nice feeling."
Preparing for his comeback under the guidance of respected Welsh trainer Gary Lockett, Cordina praised Lockett's technical expertise. "I've always trained at Gary's gym when I'm home. He was technically sound as a fighter and he's technically sound as a trainer," Cordina said. "Basics are what you need to win boxing fights - he teaches that better than most."
Cordina's opponent, Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz, may be relatively unknown but poses a significant threat with a record of 17 wins and one defeat, including 13 knockouts. "If I'm going to be world champion again, it's someone I have to get through," Cordina acknowledged. "They offered me two opponents - one was 19-0 with six knockouts, the other was 17-1. This one I have to respect his power, it'll keep me switched on. I'll be firing on all cylinders."
This fight marks a crucial step for Cordina as he aims to put a frustrating year behind him and move back towards world title contention. Boxing fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting this showdown, which promises to be a thrilling display of skill and determination.
