Aramide Oteh Faces Racist Abuse: A Dark Day for Football
Aramide Oteh of TNS was subjected to racist abuse after a Champions League match, highlighting ongoing issues in football.

In a distressing incident following the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round match between The New Saints (TNS) and KF Shkendija, TNS striker Aramide Oteh was allegedly subjected to racist abuse by a home supporter. The match, which took place at the Tose Proeski Arena in Skopje, North Macedonia, ended in a 2-1 defeat for TNS after a late goal in extra time.
TNS head coach Craig Harrison reported that Oteh, a 26-year-old former English Football League player, was left in tears due to the incident. "He is in tears - that doesn't happen for no reason," Harrison stated. "It's clearly what's been said and done. Obviously, that's unacceptable. We will be reporting that."
The New Saints released a strong statement condemning the abuse: "The New Saints FC strongly and unequivocally condemn the racist abuse directed at Aramide Oteh by a member of the home crowd following the conclusion of tonight's UEFA Champions League first qualifying round match against KF Shkendija. There is absolutely no place for racism - either in football or in society. Everyone at the club is offering their full support to Aramide and stand firmly by him."
Oteh, who joined TNS in 2024, has previously played for Queens Park Rangers, Bradford City, Stevenage, Salford City, Crawley Town, and Walsall. The London-born player was visibly upset following the match.
Shkendija has yet to comment on the incident but indicated they would consult security staff and potential witnesses. UEFA has also been approached for comment.
This incident underscores the persistent issue of racism in football, despite ongoing campaigns like UEFA's #NoToRacism. The New Saints remain committed to promoting equality, respect, and inclusion both on and off the pitch.
Following their exit from the Champions League, TNS will now compete in the Conference League, where they are set to face Differdange of Luxembourg.
