Tom Lynagh to Lead Australia Against British and Irish Lions in Historic First Test
Tom Lynagh, son of Wallaby legend Michael Lynagh, is set to start for Australia in the first Test against the British and Irish Lions at Suncorp Stadium.

Fly-Half Tom Lynagh Steps Up for Australia
In a historic moment for Australian rugby, Tom Lynagh will emulate his father, the legendary Michael Lynagh, by starting as fly-half for the Wallabies in the first Test against the British and Irish Lions this Saturday at Suncorp Stadium. At just 22 years old, Lynagh will earn his fourth cap, stepping into the pivotal number 10 jersey that his father famously wore during the 1989 series against the Lions.
Key Absences and Debuts
Australia will be without their regular starter, Noah Lolesio, due to injury, opening the door for Lynagh to showcase his talent on the international stage. Additionally, the Wallabies will miss the services of key forward Rob Valetini, who is sidelined with a calf injury. This has paved the way for Champion de Crespigny to make his debut on the flank, with Harry Wilson captaining the side from the number eight position.
In the midfield, the dynamic duo of Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Len Ikitau will look to create opportunities, but there’s no place in the squad for towering lock Will Skelton, who is also recovering from injury.
Coach Schmidt’s Confidence in Lynagh
Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has expressed his confidence in Lynagh’s ability to rise to the occasion. Despite having only an hour of Test rugby under his belt, all of which came as a replacement, Schmidt believes Lynagh’s quiet confidence will be an asset in the high-stakes environment of a Lions Test.
“He’s fitted in really well and given us the confidence he’s going to run the game really well,” Schmidt said. “It’s Suncorp Stadium, it’s his home track, and it’s a fantastic opportunity. If not now, when? You have got to start somewhere.”
Team Changes and Strategy
Schmidt has made four changes to the starting XV that narrowly defeated Fiji 21-18 earlier this month. James Slipper will start at loose-head prop, with Angus Bell moving to the bench. In the second row, Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams will step in for the absent Skelton.
Suncorp Stadium: A Wallaby Fortress
Despite the Lions’ strong record in Brisbane, Wallaby great Will Genia believes the Suncorp Stadium will provide a significant boost to the Australian team. “I would say for us it’s the unofficial home of rugby in Australia,” Genia said. “The best record we have is at the Suncorp Stadium. It feels like an actual home ground for us, so that adds a bit of confidence for the boys heading into the game.”
A Baptism of Fire
For Lynagh, this Test will be a baptism of fire. Starting his first Test match against the Lions is no small feat, but Schmidt believes it’s the perfect opportunity for the young fly-half to make his mark. “It’s not ideal to be starting your first Test match for the Wallabies against the Lions, but if not now, when?” Schmidt said.
Starting XV and Replacements
Starting XV: Wright; Jorgensen, Suaalii, Ikitau, Potter; Lynagh, Gordon; Slipper, Faessler, Alaalatoa, Frost, Williams, De Crespigny, McReight, Wilson (capt)
Replacements: Pollard, Bell, Robertson, Hooper, Tizzano, McDermott, Donaldson, Kellaway.
A Pivotal Series for Australian Rugby
This three-Test series against the Lions is more than just a sporting event; it’s a chance for Australian rugby to reignite its passion and showcase its talent on the world stage. With the eyes of the rugby world on Suncorp Stadium, Tom Lynagh and the Wallabies have the opportunity to make history.
