Javier Hernandez Faces Backlash and Fine Over Controversial Sexist Remarks
Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez fined for sexist comments, sparking widespread criticism and discussions on gender equality in sports.

Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has been fined and issued a warning regarding his future conduct following his controversial sexist remarks on social media. The Mexican Football Federation confirmed that the 37-year-old, currently playing for Liga MX side Chivas, made a series of statements on TikTok that promoted sexist stereotypes. Hernandez commented that women are 'failing' and 'eradicating masculinity,' urging them to 'allow yourselves to be led by a man.'
These remarks, made last weekend, ignited a significant backlash in Mexico. Claudia Sheinbaum, the country's first female president, responded by stating, 'Chicharito is a very good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion on women... he still has a lot to learn.'
Chivas, Hernandez's current club, released a statement asserting that his comments were 'contrary to the principles and values' of the club. They confirmed taking 'appropriate action' against the player, though specific details were not disclosed.
Hernandez, who is Mexico's all-time leading scorer, began his career at Chivas before moving to Manchester United in 2010. During his four-year tenure at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League twice. After stints with Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and West Ham, Hernandez spent four seasons with LA Galaxy in the MLS before returning to Chivas in 2023 on a two-year deal.
This incident has sparked broader conversations about gender equality and the responsibilities of athletes as public figures. The football community continues to reflect on the impact of such statements and the measures needed to foster inclusivity in the sport.
