Bend It Like Beckham 2: The Legacy Continues - A New Chapter in Women's Football
Director Gurinder Chadha announces a sequel to the iconic film 'Bend It Like Beckham,' celebrating women's football and its global impact.

A New Era for Women's Football
More than two decades after the release of the groundbreaking film Bend It Like Beckham, director Gurinder Chadha has confirmed that a sequel is in the works. The announcement came during the Euro 2025 final preparations in Basel, where England's Lionesses are set to face world champions Spain.
Inspiring a Generation
The original 2002 film, starring Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, is widely credited with inspiring a generation of women to take up football. Chadha reflected on the film's impact, stating, "We've been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters."
The Sequel's Vision
Chadha has earmarked 2027 for the sequel's release, coinciding with the film's 25th anniversary and the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. While the format—whether a film or a television series—remains undecided, Chadha expressed her desire to reunite the original cast and include cameo roles from the current England squad.
Challenges and Triumphs
Despite the progress in women's football, Chadha acknowledged ongoing challenges. "A lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don't think that women should play football," she said. "There are people who still don't take it seriously, although the Lionesses are riding high."
A Message of Empowerment
Chadha's vision for the sequel remains rooted in empowerment. "What I did was say you can do what you want, and you can have it all, and I think that's a really great message to put out again," she explained. "I think there's still stuff to say, and stuff to challenge."
The Legacy Lives On
The original film grossed almost £60 million on a budget of £3.5 million, becoming a surprise hit that resonated globally. As the sequel takes shape, it promises to continue the legacy of inspiring women and celebrating the beautiful game.
