Tragedy at Goodwood: Trueshan's Demise Overshadows Scandinavia's Triumph in the Goodwood Cup
The 2025 Goodwood Cup was marred by the tragic loss of Trueshan, while Scandinavia clinched a thrilling victory under jockey Wayne Lordan.

The opening day of the 2025 Glorious Goodwood meeting was marked by both triumph and tragedy as Scandinavia edged out stablemate Illinois in a nail-biting finish to the Goodwood Cup. However, the victory was overshadowed by the fatal injury sustained by former champion Trueshan, a beloved figure in the racing world.
The Tragedy of Trueshan
Trueshan, a nine-year-old gelding trained by Alan King, was pulled up sharply by jockey Hollie Doyle midway through the Group One feature race. The injury, a broken left hind pastern, proved to be fatal. James Given, the British Horseracing Authority's director of equine welfare, described the incident as a tragic accident. "It happened mid-race, in a straight line going up the hill," Given said. "The injury was catastrophic and left no possibility of recovery."
Trueshan's career was illustrious, with 16 wins in 34 races, including three victories in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot, two wins in the Prix du Cadran in Paris, and the 2021 Goodwood Cup, where Doyle became the first female jockey to win the race.
Scandinavia's Triumph
Amid the somber atmosphere, Scandinavia delivered a thrilling performance to secure the Goodwood Cup. Trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Wayne Lordan, the four-year-old colt battled fiercely with Illinois, another O'Brien-trained horse, in a dramatic two-mile race. Lordan praised Scandinavia's resilience, stating, "He stepped up to two miles today against the older horses. It's a tough task, but he handled it exceptionally well. There's still plenty of improvement to come."
O'Brien echoed Lordan's sentiments, describing Scandinavia as a "typical Justify - he just won't lie down. He puts his head down and won't be beaten." The victory marked a one-two finish for O'Brien, further cementing his reputation as one of the sport's most successful trainers.
Looking Ahead
With the 2025 Goodwood Cup now in the books, attention turns to future races. Scandinavia's performance has sparked speculation about his potential in next year's Ascot Gold Cup, while the racing community mourns the loss of Trueshan, a true champion whose legacy will endure.
