Sydney Lohmann: The Perfect Time to Shine in England's Football Scene
German midfielder Sydney Lohmann shares her excitement about playing in England, highlighting the vibrant football culture and her move to Manchester City.

Sydney Lohmann: Embracing the English Football Dream
Germany midfielder Sydney Lohmann believes there is no better time than now to play in England, especially following the Lionesses' triumphant Euro 2025 campaign. The 25-year-old, who recently joined Manchester City from Bayern Munich, is thrilled by the enthusiasm surrounding women's football in England.
A New Chapter in Manchester
After eight successful seasons in the Frauen-Bundesliga, Lohmann decided it was the perfect moment to take her career abroad. Manchester City, despite a challenging 2024-25 season, caught her attention with their potential and playing style.
"I can't imagine a better time than now," Lohmann told BBC Sport. "This country is crazy about football, and in Manchester, there's a different vibe. When you speak about football, it doesn't matter if it's women's or men's; they are so excited about it."
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
City's last season saw them finish fourth in the Women's Super League, missing out on European competition. However, Lohmann is optimistic about the team's future under new manager Andree Jeglertz, who was appointed this summer.
"They were underperforming, but you could see all the potential," Lohmann added. "I was interested in the playing style. I can feel the hunger; no one was satisfied with last season."
A Memorable Moment in Women's Football
Lohmann is no stranger to English audiences, having been part of one of the most iconic moments in women's football during the Euro 2022 final. A heated exchange with Jill Scott became a viral sensation, and now, three years later, Lohmann can laugh about the incident.
"It's funny; I did not realize what a big thing it has been," Lohmann said. "I just remember it as a really intense moment in the game. We were both quite emotional, and I have heard Jill is a lovely person."
Addressing Online Abuse
Lohmann also spoke about the challenges of online abuse, which she faced after Germany's exit from Euro 2025. Despite the negativity, she remains resilient, supported by her teammates and coaches.
"To see and read that stuff right after the game when you are sensitive to that… of course, you shouldn't experience that, but I know where to put it and in what context," Lohmann said. "There will always be some idiots."
Lohmann emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and putting pressure on platforms to curb such behavior. "It is important not to let people say whatever they want," she added.
Looking Forward
As Lohmann settles into her new life in Manchester, she is excited about the opportunities ahead and the chance to contribute to Manchester City's success. With her talent and determination, she is poised to make a significant impact in the Women's Super League.
