From Bakoteh to Brighton: The Inspiring Journey of Yankuba Minteh

Discover the remarkable journey of Yankuba Minteh from the sandy pitches of Bakoteh to the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Yankuba Minteh's journey from the sandy pitches of Bakoteh, The Gambia, to the Premier League is a story of determination, talent, and perseverance. At just 21 years old, Minteh has become a key player for Brighton & Hove Albion, but his roots remain firmly planted in his hometown.

Early Beginnings

Minteh's passion for football was evident from a young age. Despite his mother's initial disapproval, he spent countless hours honing his skills on the local sandy pitch. "I wanted to change their life and take them out of poverty," Minteh told BBC Sport Africa. His dedication paid off when he made the bold decision to leave his family and pursue his dream in Europe.

Rise to Prominence

After stints in Denmark and the Netherlands, Minteh signed with Brighton in 2023. His debut season was a success, with six goals in 32 league appearances. Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler played a significant role in his development. "He is somebody who plays a big role in my life and I am really thankful," Minteh said.

Inspirations and Role Models

Minteh draws inspiration from football legends like Lionel Messi and Sadio Mane. "I fell in love with him," Minteh said of Messi. "He has [had] a big influence in my career since I was young." Mane's humility and philanthropy also resonate with Minteh, who hopes to give back to his community in The Gambia.

Giving Back

Minteh's success has allowed him to improve his family's living situation, moving them from a cramped apartment to a well-furnished bungalow. He also provides kit and footballs for local teams in Bakoteh, inspiring the next generation of players.

Future Aspirations

Minteh aims to continue his upward trajectory in the Premier League and make a lasting impact on his hometown. "I know that's impossible - but those who are lucky could be more than me," he said, reflecting on his journey and the potential of young players in Bakoteh.

Yankuba Minteh's story is a testament to the power of dreams and hard work, proving that with determination, anything is possible.
