Ruben Neves Honors Diogo Jota by Taking the Number 21 Shirt for Portugal
Ruben Neves honors his late friend Diogo Jota by taking the number 21 shirt for Portugal, as the team prepares for World Cup qualifiers.

The number 21 shirt, previously worn by the late Diogo Jota for Portugal, has been passed to his close friend and former teammate Ruben Neves. This gesture is a heartfelt tribute to Jota, who tragically passed away in a car crash in July alongside his brother Andre Silva.
A Tribute to a Friend Ruben Neves, who currently plays for Al-Hilal, was one of the pallbearers at Jota's funeral. The two shared a close bond, having played together at Wolves and for the Portuguese national team. Portugal manager Roberto Martinez explained the decision, stating, "The number 21 jersey will go to Ruben Neves because, that way, that number will remain on the field and with all of us. He had a very close relationship with Diogo and is the ideal person to represent him."
Honoring Jota's Memory The Portugal team will hold their first camp without Jota next week as they prepare for World Cup qualifying games against Armenia and Hungary. Martinez emphasized the impact Jota had on the team, saying, "We know what Diogo meant to each of us and the impact he had on our lives. We want to honor his memory every day. He will be with us and will be another force helping us achieve our goals. Diogo's example is a light for us. We will carry his spirit in our hearts."
A Legacy of Excellence Jota's legacy is not only remembered by his national team but also by his club, Liverpool. The club retired the number 20 shirt after consulting with his wife Rute Cardoso and family members. Brighton midfielder James Milner is wearing the number 20 shirt this season as a "mark of respect" to his former Liverpool teammate.
Moving Forward As Portugal moves forward, Jota's absence serves as a source of unity, motivation, and responsibility. Martinez concluded, "Diogo's absence is a factor of unity, motivation, and responsibility, because Diogo wanted to win the World Cup, and we are here to fight and achieve that dream."
The team's upcoming matches will be a testament to their resilience and determination to honor Jota's memory on the international stage.
