Austin Hedges: The Heartbeat of the Clubhouse and MLB's Most Valuable Backup Catcher

Discover why Austin Hedges, despite a .186 lifetime batting average, is considered the most important backup catcher in MLB and a beloved clubhouse leader.

The Unlikely Hero of the Clubhouse

At 8 a.m. on a chilly February morning in the Cleveland Guardians clubhouse, Austin Hedges is already in full swing—shirtless, as usual, and surrounded by laughter. His teammates often joke about his resemblance to their former manager, Terry Francona, who once quipped, "With his shirt off, he looks like me." But Hedges is more than just a source of amusement; he’s the glue that holds the team together.

A Career Defined by Leadership, Not Stats

With a lifetime batting average of .186, Hedges might not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing MLB stars. Yet, his impact on the game is undeniable. As the best backup catcher in baseball, Hedges has been instrumental in his teams' success, including three straight postseason appearances and a 2023 World Series title with the Texas Rangers. His ability to handle pitchers, bring levity to tense situations, and mentor younger players has made him an invaluable asset.

The Man Behind the Mask

Hedges’ journey to becoming a clubhouse legend wasn’t always smooth. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2011, he struggled with the pressures of professional baseball, even questioning his love for the game. "It was so stressful and overwhelming," he recalls. But a trade to the Cleveland Guardians in 2020 marked a turning point. "Getting traded to Cleveland was my fresh start," Hedges says. "I realized I didn’t have to be the guy who hits .300 with 40 homers every year. I could make an impact in other ways."

A Future in Baseball

At 32, Hedges shows no signs of slowing down. He’s expressed a desire to play for another decade and has even considered a future in coaching or managing. "I’ve decided I want to be a lifer in baseball," he says. "When I’m done playing, if I could still be in the big leagues, I’d feel like the luckiest man alive."

The Legacy of Austin Hedges

Whether he’s celebrating a walk-off home run or mentoring a rookie, Austin Hedges embodies the spirit of baseball. His relentless energy, self-deprecating humor, and unwavering commitment to his team make him a true clubhouse hero. As he continues his career, one thing is certain: Austin Hedges will always be more than just a backup catcher—he’ll be the heartbeat of the team.
