Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight Await Contracts as Bengals Rookie Minicamp Begins

Cincinnati Bengals' top draft picks Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight observe minicamp drills while awaiting contract signings, aiming to contribute immediately.

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals kicked off their rookie minicamp on Friday, but two of their top draft picks, Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight, were sidelined as they await the finalization of their contracts. Stewart, a first-round defensive end, and Knight, a second-round linebacker, stood in uniform but did not participate in drills at Paycor Stadium.

Contract Negotiations Ongoing Bengals head coach Zac Taylor addressed the situation, stating, "They're just working through their contracts right now." This delay is not unusual for NFL rookies, as teams and players often finalize contract details during the early stages of minicamp. Typically, these negotiations align with the broader league trends as other drafted players sign their deals.

Stewart's Perspective Shemar Stewart expressed his frustration with being on the sidelines. "I just decided not to sign those papers," Stewart told reporters. "I hate being on the sideline looking at everybody else do work. I would love to be part of the team." Stewart, the 17th overall pick, is expected to bolster the Bengals' pass rush alongside Trey Hendrickson, who is also seeking a contract extension.

Knight's Role Demetrius Knight, the 49th overall pick, could potentially step into a starting linebacker role opposite Logan Wilson. With Germaine Pratt requesting a trade, Knight's development will be crucial for the Bengals' defensive plans.

Looking Ahead The Bengals will resume offseason workouts on Monday as they continue Phase 2 of voluntary workouts. Both Stewart and Knight are anticipated to be key contributors in the upcoming season, providing depth and talent to Cincinnati's defense.

Additional Notes

  • Stewart aims to have his contract finalized by next week.
  • Knight, along with Clemson's Barrett Carter, was drafted to strengthen the Bengals' linebacker corps.
  • Taylor did not provide updates on Hendrickson's contract extension negotiations.

As the Bengals prepare for the 2025 season, the integration of their top draft picks will be pivotal in their pursuit of playoff success.
