Drake Maye's Stellar Performance Leads Patriots to Victory Over Dolphins
Drake Maye showcased significant improvement as he led the New England Patriots to a thrilling 33-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins in NFL Week 2.

In a high-stakes NFL Week 2 matchup, Drake Maye of the New England Patriots delivered a standout performance, guiding his team to a hard-fought 33-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins. This win marked the Patriots' first of the season and highlighted Maye's growth as a quarterback.
Maye, who had a mixed performance in Week 1, showed remarkable improvement, completing 19 of 23 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added 10 rushes for 31 yards and a rushing touchdown, becoming the first Patriots player since Tom Brady in 2019 to achieve two passing touchdowns and one rushing TD in a single game.
The game was a rollercoaster, with the Patriots and Dolphins exchanging leads multiple times. Maye's composure was evident, especially in the third quarter when the Dolphins were leading 20-15. Facing a second-and-12 from their own 15-yard line, Maye executed a crucial play, connecting with Rhamondre Stevenson for a 55-yard catch-and-run that silenced the home crowd.
"I thought I overthrew it at first, and he made a great play," Maye said post-game. Stevenson credited the play to their offseason practice: "That's a play we've been working on all offseason. I was excited to be in the game when they called it and make a play."
Maye's 6-yard scramble for a touchdown later in the quarter gave the Patriots a 23-20 lead, setting up a wild fourth quarter. The Dolphins responded with a 73-yard punt return touchdown by Malik Washington, but the Patriots quickly countered with a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown by Antonio Gibson, putting them back on top 30-27.
Despite the back-and-forth, Maye and the Patriots managed to hold on, with Andy Borregales sealing the win with a 53-yard field goal. Head coach Mike Vrabel praised Maye's performance, noting his precision and command: "There's a lot of good things and a lot of things we'll have to fix. He's a jockey, and he's got to know what the flow of the team looks like offensively."
Looking ahead, Maye and the Patriots will face a tougher test as they host Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) in Week 3. Maye emphasized the team effort in the victory: "That felt good. So many ebbs and flows of the game. I'm proud of our guys for sticking with it."
