Jorge Alcala's Struggles and Potential

Alcala, 29, has had a challenging season with the Twins, posting an 8.88 ERA in 22 appearances. His final outing with Minnesota was particularly rough, as he gave up five runs (four earned) in a 16-4 loss to the Texas Rangers. Despite his recent struggles, Alcala has shown promise in the past, notably in 2021 when he pitched in a career-high 59 games and finished the 2024 season with a solid 3.24 ERA in 54 relief appearances.

Andy Lugo's Rising Star

On the other side of the trade, the Twins acquire Andy Lugo, a 21-year-old infielder who has been making waves in the minor leagues. Lugo was batting .265 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 44 games for High-A Greenville. Known for his versatility, Lugo has played both the infield and outfield, but has primarily been stationed in the infield this season, with 21 starts at first base and 16 at third base.

Roster Adjustments

To accommodate Alcala on their 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated right-handed pitcher Brian Van Belle for assignment. Van Belle, who was selected to the active roster on June 9, has yet to appear in a major league game this season. Meanwhile, the Twins will fill Alcala's spot on their 26-man roster with left-hander Joey Wentz, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
