Bristol Bears Secure Key Players: Ward and Bern Extend Contracts

England rugby stars Abbie Ward and Sarah Bern have renewed their contracts with Bristol Bears, bolstering the team's lineup for upcoming seasons.

England lock Abbie Ward and prop Sarah Bern have committed their futures to Premiership Women's Rugby side Bristol Bears by signing new contracts. This announcement comes just ahead of the Six Nations tournament, where both players are set to represent the Red Roses.

Abbie Ward's Journey and Commitment

Abbie Ward, who co-captains the team, has inked a two-year deal with the club she joined from Harlequins in 2021. The 31-year-old, boasting 69 caps for England, has been a pivotal figure in the Bears' journey to the league semi-finals this season. Ward's return to rugby in April 2024, after the birth of her daughter, marked a significant moment as she became the first contracted England woman to have a baby since the team turned professional in 2019.

"We have created something special at Bristol Bears, and I'm proud to be part of it," Ward expressed. She is eager to see the team "pushing ourselves further" in the coming seasons.

Sarah Bern's Stellar Performance

Sarah Bern, aged 27, has been with the Bears since 2018 and is currently in the prime of her career, according to head coach Dave Ward. Bern's remarkable line breaks and running ability have been evident this season, contributing to a league-record 41 penalties achieved by her scrum.

"Her endeavour to become the complete player is commendable," noted Dave Ward.

Bern, who has 66 international caps and started 13 league games this season, shared her enthusiasm: "I believe it's the best place for me right now and I believe the Bears are growing into something special."

Looking Ahead

With both Ward and Bern secured, Bristol Bears are poised for a strong performance in upcoming competitions. Their experience and skill set will undoubtedly be crucial as the team aims to build on their recent successes and strive for new heights in Premiership Women's Rugby.
