Scott Lawson Appointed as Head Coach of Bristol Bears Women: A New Era Begins
Former Scotland hooker Scott Lawson named head coach of Bristol Bears Women, bringing a wealth of experience to the Premiership Women's Rugby side.

Bristol Bears Women have announced the appointment of Scott Lawson as their new head coach. The 43-year-old former Scotland international joins the Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) side from the Scottish Rugby Union, where he served as a specialist skills coach for their women's squad, men's under-20s team, and Glasgow Warriors' academy.
A Stellar Playing Career
Scott Lawson boasts an impressive 16-year playing career, earning 47 international caps for Scotland and making 250 appearances for prominent clubs such as Glasgow, Sale, Gloucester, London Irish, and Newcastle, where he retired in 2018. His extensive experience on the field is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.
Transition to Coaching
Lawson, who has also worked as the director of rugby at the University of St Andrews, will join Bristol Bears following the U20 World Championship in Italy, scheduled from June 29 to July 19. His transition to coaching has been marked by a commitment to player development and a relentless pursuit of success.
A New Chapter for Bristol Bears
Lawson's appointment follows the departure of Dave Ward in April, who had been the head coach for four years. Under Ward's leadership, the Bears reached their fourth successive PWR semi-final last season but were defeated by Gloucester-Hartpury in what proved to be his final match. The team also made their first final in 2024, where they faced the same fate.
Lawson's Vision for the Future
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Lawson said, "From the moment I spoke with Daisie Mayes [general manager] and Pat Lam [director of rugby], it was clear that the vision for the women's programme and the aligned approach across the whole club was something I really wanted to be a part of."
He added, "I've loved my time with Scottish Rugby and will always be grateful for the experiences and relationships I've built there, which I'll continue to value moving forward. But this was an exciting opportunity I simply couldn't resist."
Endorsement from the Club
Pat Lam, the director of rugby at Bristol Bears, highlighted Lawson's qualifications: "His vast coaching and playing experience across a range of different environments and levels, together with his passion for the role, understanding of the club vision, and focus on player development and winning impressed us during the interview process."
Looking Ahead
While the length of Lawson's contract has not been disclosed, the club is optimistic about the future under his leadership. With a clear vision and a dedicated approach, Lawson aims to bring success to Bristol Bears Women and elevate their standing in the Premiership Women's Rugby.
