From Rejection to Resilience: Puja Tomar's Journey to UFC Stardom

Puja Tomar, the first Indian woman in UFC, shares her inspiring journey from societal rejection to becoming a global MMA star, advocating for gender equality in sports.

Puja Tomar’s journey to becoming the first Indian woman to compete in the UFC is a story of resilience, determination, and breaking societal norms. Born in a small village in Uttar Pradesh, India, Tomar faced gender discrimination from the moment she was born.

Early Struggles and Family Challenges

Tomar reveals that her parents initially did not want her because she was a girl. “My family and this society doesn’t allow girls, they like only boys,” Tomar told BBC Sport. “Before I was born, they wanted a boy. Even when I was a newborn, my mum told me my father didn’t want a third girl.” This societal pressure, rooted in cultural beliefs that favor male children, shaped her early experiences. However, the loss of her father at a young age fueled her determination to prove herself.

Overcoming Adversity

Tomar’s journey into martial arts began with a desire to challenge the gender norms imposed on her. Inspired by Jackie Chan movies, she taught herself kung fu and began challenging boys in her village. “I wanted to beat boys. So I learned Jackie Chan movies and kung-fu and how to beat the boys,” she said. Her mother, who supported her despite societal pressures, played a crucial role in her development.

Breaking Barriers in MMA

Tomar’s path to professional MMA was fraught with challenges. From a lack of training facilities to societal stigma, she had to navigate numerous obstacles. “MMA sport training is very hard in India. In my society, you have to be fully clothed when you train with men. It’s very hard,” she explained. Despite these hurdles, she persevered, eventually moving to Soma Fight Club in Bali, Indonesia, to train.

UFC Debut and Advocacy

Tomar made her UFC debut in June 2025, winning her first fight and becoming a symbol of hope for women in India. She uses her platform to advocate for gender equality, urging parents to support their daughters. “I just want to tell every parent to be proud you have a girl. Give confidence to your girls, give belief to them,” she said. Her success has inspired parents in her village to consider MMA as a viable path for their daughters.

A Legacy in the Making

Tomar’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. From being unwanted as a child to becoming a UFC fighter, she has defied societal expectations and paved the way for future generations. “I just want to work hard and keep going and win and win. One day I want to be on top,” she said, embodying the spirit of a true champion.

Conclusion

Puja Tomar’s journey is not just about personal success but also about challenging and changing societal norms. Her story serves as an inspiration to women everywhere, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
