Defying the Odds: Dwayne McCracken's Inspiring Journey from Cancer to Isle of Man TT Glory
Dwayne McCracken, a motorsport team owner, shares his inspiring journey of battling cancer and leading his team at the 2025 Isle of Man TT.

Dwayne McCracken's Inspiring Journey
Dwayne McCracken, the resilient team owner of Lionheart Moto Racing, is making headlines at the 2025 Isle of Man TT, just two years after being diagnosed with Stage 3 inoperable pancreatic cancer. Despite a grim prognosis in June 2023, McCracken underwent extensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, defying the odds and emerging stronger.
A New Lease on Life
McCracken's journey is nothing short of inspirational. "I went through a tough time with chemo and radiotherapy but thankfully I have come out the other side," he shared with BBC Sport NI. His motivation stems from a desire to show others that it's possible to overcome significant challenges. "I want people to see that you can come through a bit of a tough time and come out the other side," he added.
Family as the Driving Force
For McCracken, his family was the cornerstone of his recovery. "I was told my prognosis wasn't very good but in terms of treatment I just said 'hit me with both barrels, I don't care, I'll take the pain, because I have a young family, I can't be going anywhere'," he recounted. His unwavering focus and determination were fueled by the thought of his loved ones.
Lionheart Moto Racing: A Dream Realized
McCracken's long-standing passion for motorcycle racing led him to establish Lionheart Moto Racing. The team's name was inspired by the song "Lionheart" by Joel Corry and Tom Grennan, which played frequently during his hospital visits. "My wife said to me, 'that's you' and when you listen to it it's quite a powerful song, it's very inspirational," he explained.
Supporting a Cause
In addition to his racing endeavors, McCracken is committed to supporting the NIPANC charity, which aids those affected by pancreatic cancer. "It gives me a focus and a purpose, it gives me something to do and it's a self medication because motorbikes are my passion," he said. His efforts to give back to the charity are deeply personal, reflecting the support he received during his own battle.
A Legacy in Motorsport
McCracken's extensive experience in motorsport, including collaborations with legends like 23-time TT winner John McGuinness, has been instrumental in his team's success. "I've been really lucky to work with some of the best guys that there are," he remarked. His pride in mentoring emerging talents like Paul Jordan further underscores his dedication to the sport.
Looking Ahead
With Belgian rider Julian Trummer on board, McCracken is optimistic about Lionheart Moto Racing's performance at the TT. "Julian's a talented lad, he's a very nice lad, and we've put together a fantastic team of mechanics," he said. McCracken's story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the unyielding spirit of a true motorsport enthusiast.
