Jonny Evans Takes Time to Decide Future After Manchester United Departure
Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans discusses his future plans after leaving the club, reflecting on his career and hopes for Northern Ireland's football team.

Former Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans has stated that he is in no rush to decide his next move following his departure from Manchester United. The 37-year-old left Old Trafford after his contract expired at the end of the 2024-25 season. This marked the end of his second spell at United, where he initially came through the club's academy and went on to win three Premier League titles and the Champions League.
"I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future. "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything."
Evans made a total of 241 appearances across his two spells at United. Between his stints at Old Trafford, he spent three years at West Brom from 2015 before joining Leicester City. He played a pivotal role in Leicester's FA Cup triumph in 2021. Evans returned to United on a one-year deal in 2023, winning the 2024 FA Cup before extending his contract for another season.
Internationally, Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland, retiring from international duty last year. He was a key figure in Northern Ireland's journey to the Euro 2016 knockout stages. Evans expressed optimism about the current squad's prospects under manager Michael O'Neill, who previously led the team to a major tournament.
"When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," Evans said during halftime at Tuesday's friendly against Iceland at Windsor Park. "He's taken the team to a major tournament before, and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. When I look at this team, it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and has Isaac Price, who's in good form. You see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football, and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Over the next couple of years, I think we'll see them progress together."
Evans' career has been marked by significant achievements and contributions to both club and country. As he takes time to consider his next steps, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see where the veteran defender's journey takes him next.
