Will Skelton Aims for Redemption: Lions Rematch on the Horizon

Will Skelton reflects on his past encounter with the British and Irish Lions and looks forward to a potential rematch, highlighting his growth and Australia's rugby evolution.

A Veteran's Reflection on Past Encounters

Australia lock Will Skelton is gearing up for what could be a historic rematch against the British and Irish Lions. At 33, Skelton has come a long way since his first senior match with the Waratahs in 2013, where they faced a crushing 47-17 defeat against the Lions.

Learning from the Past

"I was very raw," Skelton admitted, reflecting on his early days. "I didn't understand the magnitude of the tour as I do now with all the experience I have had." He recently revisited footage from that game to analyze his performance and prepare for the upcoming series. "I watched the game again last week and I walked a lot of that game. I wasn't actually that good, I didn't have too many involvements - it was probably my third professional game."

Preparing for the Challenge

Skelton, who moved to La Rochelle from Saracens in 2020, is the only overseas-based player in Australia's squad for their warm-up Test against Fiji on 6 July. Standing at 6ft 8in and weighing nearly 23 stone, Skelton is a formidable presence on the field. When asked if his power could be a key factor against the Lions, he responded, "I will just try and be myself. They have some great players, but we have also got some weapons in this team."

Australia's Rugby Evolution

Skelton is optimistic about Australia's current rugby landscape. "Aussie rugby in the last two years has improved a lot and this Wallaby team is playing a brand of footy the whole country is getting behind. We really want to take it to these guys." Despite a disappointing exit in the 2023 Rugby World Cup pool stages, Skelton has returned to the national team, marking his comeback in the 2024 autumn internationals against Wales.

The Lions' Legacy

The Lions' 2-1 series win in Australia in 2013 was their first tour victory in 16 years and remains their most recent triumph. Skelton's potential rematch against the Lions could be a defining moment in his career, offering a chance for redemption and to showcase his growth as a player.
