Wimbledon Finals: Key Insights and FAQs You Need to Know
Get the latest insights and answers to your burning questions about the Wimbledon finals, from racquet strings to championship trends.

Do Racquet Strings Ever Break? If So, How?
Yes, racquet strings do break, and it's more likely due to friction rather than force. Paul Skipp, head of the Wimbledon stringing team, explains that strings most commonly break because they rub against each other. "It's going to be the friction," he said. "As they move, they slide, and they cause the friction. When you hit spin and they slide back and forth, that's the thing that will cause the strings to break." Players generally have their racquets restrung after every match, with tension varying based on the playing surface and weather conditions.
How Many Matches Are Played During the Tournament?
A total of 675 matches are played across the 18 courts during Wimbledon fortnight. This includes men's and women's singles, doubles, mixed doubles, junior events, and wheelchair tournaments.
Why Do We No Longer See the Chelsea Pensioners at Wimbledon?
The Chelsea Pensioners may still attend Wimbledon but are not as prominently featured. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) allocates 16 tickets per day between the Lest We Forget and Not Forgotten Associations, which include Chelsea Pensioners and other service personnel. These tickets alternate between Centre Court and Court One for the first 12 days of the tournament.
Why Do the Women's Champions Change So Often While the Men's Don't?
In the past decade, Wimbledon has seen only four different men's winners compared to nine different women's champions. Former world number five Daniela Hantuchova attributes this to the strength of the women's field. "I feel like the field is much stronger across the top 100 - the physicality has moved to another level," she said. Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli notes the absence of a dominant player like Serena Williams, which has led to a more diverse range of champions.
