Mike Powell Suspended Over Safeguarding Concerns: A Blow to Athletics
Long jump world record holder Mike Powell has been suspended indefinitely due to safeguarding concerns, impacting his role in athletics.

Long jump world record holder Mike Powell has been indefinitely suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) over a safeguarding concern. The 61-year-old American, a two-time Olympic silver medallist and current college coach, is now barred from all activities sanctioned by World Athletics, its area associations, or member federations.
Powell, who joined the track and field coaching staff at Azusa Pacific University in California in 2022, is also prohibited from attending hospitality or private access venues linked to World Athletics Series events. The AIU has stated that the suspension could be adjusted upon application or appeal.
Azusa Pacific University has been approached for comment but has yet to respond.
Powell set the men's long jump world record of 8.95 metres at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, a record that still stands today. This suspension marks a significant moment in athletics, raising questions about the safeguarding measures within the sport.
