Alex Dunne Makes History with Stunning F2 Victory in Bahrain
Irish teenager Alex Dunne secures a historic win in Formula 2 at Bahrain, marking a milestone in his racing career.

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, 19-year-old Irish driver Alex Dunne claimed his first Formula 2 victory at the Bahrain International Circuit. Competing in the series' 200th race, Dunne showcased his exceptional talent by moving up from fourth on the grid to take the lead by the seventh lap, eventually winning by an impressive 8.2-second margin over British driver Luke Browning.
Dunne, a McLaren development driver, expressed his disbelief and joy after the race, stating, "I have no words, to be honest. All the race runs in testing were quite positive, I knew the pace was there to do something good but I didn't expect this." His victory was celebrated by his Rodin Motorsport team, with McLaren CEO Zak Brown also extending his congratulations.
The young driver's performance was a stark contrast to the previous day's sprint race, where he finished outside the points after several on-track incidents. However, Sunday's race highlighted why Dunne has been regarded as a future star since his British F4 championship win in 2022.
Dunne's strategy was flawless. Starting fourth, he quickly moved into second place behind reigning Formula 3 champion Leonardo Fornaroli. By the seventh lap, Dunne executed a bold move into the first corner to seize the lead, which he maintained throughout the race, only briefly losing it during pit stops.
Reflecting on his performance, Dunne said, "I was disappointed after yesterday. I wasn't happy with the job I did so I think I've redeemed myself and bounced back really well." When asked about his championship prospects in his rookie season, Dunne remained cautious, adding, "It's too early to say. I think I'm driving at a good level at the minute, so I feel if I can continue the good form then I don't see why we won't be contenders."
With this historic win, Dunne has firmly established himself as a rising star in the world of motorsport, bringing pride to Ireland and setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
