Iga Swiatek Dominates US Open Opener with Straight-Set Victory
World number two Iga Swiatek starts her US Open campaign with a commanding win over Emiliana Arango, showcasing her dominance on the court.

World number two Iga Swiatek began her quest for a second US Open title in style, securing a straight-set victory over Colombia's Emiliana Arango. The match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, saw Swiatek dominate with a 6-1, 6-2 win, highlighting her readiness for the tournament.
Swiatek, who recently claimed her first Wimbledon title, is the favorite to add another US Open trophy to her collection, following her 2022 triumph. Her performance against Arango was a testament to her skill and focus, as she hit 26 winners compared to Arango's five and won 76% of her service points without facing a break point.
"It felt great - first matches are not easy to get used to the rhythm and it was a solid match," Swiatek commented after the match. "I am happy that I wasn't trying to overpower and I was solid."
Swiatek's preparation for the US Open was marked by a victory at the Cincinnati Open, a WTA 1000 event, which set the stage for her strong start in New York. Her recent participation in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles event alongside Casper Ruud, where they reached the final, further underscores her versatility and competitive spirit.
In her match against Arango, Swiatek took early control with a break of serve in the fourth game, followed by another break for a 5-1 lead, and held her serve to clinch the first set. Her dominance continued into the second set, where she broke Arango's serve in the opening game and again in the seventh, sealing the win in just over an hour.
Swiatek's next challenge will be against the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens, ranked 66 in the world, in the second round. As she progresses through the tournament, all eyes will be on Swiatek to see if she can continue her dominant form and claim her second US Open title.
