World number one Jannik Sinner demonstrated his resilience and skill as he advanced to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over the tenacious Adrian Mannarino.
Sinner quickly asserted his dominance by breaking Mannarino's serve in the third game of the first set. Despite Mannarino's efforts, including saving a break point with a powerful ace in the seventh game, Sinner maintained his composure to clinch the first set.
The match faced an unexpected interruption due to rain, with Sinner trailing 2-1 in the second set. After a delay of nearly three hours, play resumed, and Mannarino showcased his determination, pushing Sinner to his limits. Mannarino saved three break points at 5-5 but ultimately succumbed to Sinner's relentless pressure, netting a backhand to fall behind 6-5.
Serving for the match, Sinner faced a brief scare as Mannarino earned his first break point with a stunning forehand return. However, Sinner responded with back-to-back aces to secure the tie-break and the match.
"He's a tough opponent," Sinner remarked. "Very different to all the other opponents. Not only because he is a leftie but also how he hits the ball - it's very low. I struggled a bit to close it out but this can happen in this sport and I'm very happy to be in the next round."
In other matches, Alexander Zverev completed his victory over Brandon Nakashima with a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline after their match was suspended overnight due to rain. Zverev is set to face Karen Khachanov in the fourth round.
Additionally, seventh seed Holger Rune advanced to the quarter-finals after his opponent, Frances Tiafoe, retired due to a back injury while trailing 6-4, 3-1.
