Norrie's Defeat: British number three Cameron Norrie, ranked 88 in the world, suffered a first-round exit at the Barcelona Open. He was beaten 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-3 by 27th-ranked Karen Khachanov of Russia. Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Norrie had a close first set but couldn't hold on.
Alcaraz's Battle: Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two, was forced to work hard to beat underdog Ethan Quinn. He was a break down in the second set but fought back to win 6-2 7-6 (8-6).
Other Matches: Defending Barcelona champion Casper Ruud sailed into the last 16 with a 6-4 6-3 win. Last year's runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas also had a strong win.
